Musk's Grok Bot will run on Claude Opus 5.5, Midjourney, Suno and eventually Grok

Today: GPT-6 with Intelligent UI reaches ChatGPT's Free and Go tiers.

Big thing

Musk: Grok Bot will use Claude Opus 5.5 and other outside models

Musk said SpaceX will "use the best back end model for any given task, including Claude Opus 5.5, MidJourney, Suno and other leading APIs", so his assistant now sends work to a rival lab's model. @poteto, who works on Grok Bot, said "all bots will be powered by opus 5.5", and that it's already rolling out. Musk added later that most requests are simple and will go to a fast Grok 4.8 "when that comes out".

Cheered as the practical move, and read as an admission that Grok is behind. @Scobleizer: "Grok goes open. Holy shit." (1.5M). @AlexFinn: "The Claude Bot everyone has been waiting for has arrived and it's.... Grok Bot". @testingcatalog: it "raises a bit of a concern on expectations we should set for upcoming Grok models." @notjazii: "is elon giving up on grok?"

Elon says Grok Bot is "like hiring an extremely competent employee", and for the bot's own brain he just hired Claude over the candidate from the family (Grok 4.7, "excellent" he posted the day before). Grok 4.8 gets the simple requests when it's out (the internship, basically). We like it that way: family or not, the best model gets the job, and Grok has to win it back.

Labs news & launches

1. Grok Bot can now search, read and monitor X

▶ Watch the video

Bots can now search, read and monitor X directly. Per @ai_for_success, it's available to everyone with no X connector to set up.

Liked, mostly for finding things. @venturetwins: "Holy shit we have meme search on X now!" Give it an image and it "can find the origin of a meme, most viral tweets, or even specific genres of post" (137K).

2. Claude Haiku 5.5 is out

▶ Watch the video

Anthropic's new small model costs $0.10/$0.50 per million tokens on prompts under 100K tokens ($0.50/$2.50 above), about 75% less to run than Haiku 4.5 on average. It's the first Haiku with an adjustable effort setting, and it scores 43 on the Artificial Analysis Intelligence Index, up 26 points on the last Haiku. Anthropic also halved cache reads on Sonnet 5.5, to $0.10 per million tokens.

Loved for the price, with doubts from people who ran their own tests. r/singularity's top reply: "The price to performance is crazy good". @Layton_Gott: it "literally beats its old flagship on BOTH knowledge-work benchmarks" (159K). @bridgemindai: it "completely fails the BridgeBench lava lamp test", where GPT-6 Luna was "over 6x faster and 3x cheaper".

3. Claude Max and Team plans now come with monthly API credits

Max 5x gets $100 a month, Max 20x $200, and Team up to $500, pooled. The credits work on any model, in your own code or in third-party harnesses.

Welcomed, and turned on OpenAI. @robinebers: "claude now gives you hundreds of dollars per month extra" (320K). @kimmonismus: "Anthropic keeps on giving", then "OpenAI: your turn."

4. GPT-6 and Intelligent UI roll out to all of ChatGPT

▶ Watch the video

ChatGPT's answers can now mix text with charts, buttons, forms and small interactive tools built for the question. Paid tiers got it on Wednesday, running GPT-6 Sol, and Free and Go tiers follow from today on GPT-6 Luna. It applies to the Chat tab only.

Taken as a nice upgrade, with confusion over the name. @cheatyyyy: "what the hell is "GPT-6" is this Astra or Sol or Luna?" (373K). @testingcatalog: "It seems like we are not getting GPT-6.1 on ChatGPT yet." @thsottiaux called it "the big one" of Codex day 3, next to a new high of 40M active users across Codex and ChatGPT Work.

5. A mathematicians' group urges a boycott of OpenAI, and Terence Tao reposts it

The Association for Human Mathematics criticised Tuesday's release of 722 manuscripts, said "Mathematicians did not ask for this work to be done", and urged mathematicians "to discontinue their work with OpenAI". Tao reposted the statement on his blog.

Mostly scorn for the statement. r/accelerate's top reply: "Sorry Terry, but you don't own math." r/singularity's top reply: "the idea that math or physics etc. should be human only is insane". @XYHan_: it's "the mathematics equivalent of becoming Amish".

6. [rumour] Gemini 4 Argon shows up in Google Cloud

A billing entry for Gemini 4 Argon Cyber Permissive appeared in Google Cloud's Vertex AI billing catalogue on 7 Oct, which @LuminaBench says normally means a launch the same day (none came). @pankajkumar_dev gives pricing of $4 input and $20 output per million tokens, but Google's own launch price is an introductory $2 input and $10 output, with $4 and $20 only after that period. The model is still limited to trusted cyber defenders (Fairwind Program).

More impatience than excitement. @lyraxana: "Happy Gemini 4 Argon day to everyone!" (102K). @TokenGremlin: "who the hell wants this model when we already have GPT-6 Sol in Chat, GPT-6 Astra and Opus 5.5 as absolute workhorses".

7. Google opens SynthID Detector to everyone

▶ Watch the video

Anyone can now upload an image, video or audio file and check it for a SynthID watermark, whether it came from Google's models or from partners including OpenAI, NVIDIA and Kakao, with Apple "coming soon".

Little reaction beyond Google's own posts. @GoogleAI says it has watermarked 180 billion images and videos. @DegenOfWallSt: "a miss doesn't mean a human made it."

8. Microsoft rebuilds Windows around agents that run on the PC

Microsoft showed PCs built on NVIDIA's RTX Spark chip, starting with the $2,599 Surface Laptop Ultra, that run models like its 137B-parameter MAI-Code-1.1 Flash on the device in the higher-memory configurations (up to 128 GB). GitHub Copilot will hand work to those local models with no inference charge (experimental preview later in October), and agents run inside MXC, a sandbox built into Windows.

Local-AI people were pleased to see llama.cpp on stage. r/LocalLLaMA's top reply: "It's good that it's not ollama here, like it used to be." @ClementDelangue: "If you need any more evidence about how exciting local AI (and llamacpp) is!" @tomwarren caught the typo: "The most ports ever on a Surace Laptop."

9. Theo ships a Rust rewrite of the TypeScript compiler he never read

tsc-rs is an open-source drop-in replacement for tsc (compiler, type checker and LSP), built by agents over five months. He says about $400K of Codex tokens "got nowhere", then about $20K of Opus "got there in 2 weeks", and "I have not read a single line of the code."

Few takes in the stored posts so far. The post itself passed 579K views.

10. Liquid AI releases Open d1, two open-weight decision models

d1-3B takes text and vision, and d1-omni-600M takes text with an image or audio. Decision models answer in a single pass instead of generating tokens one by one, and these are sized to run from data centers down to NVIDIA Jetson boards.

Read as the open answer to TypeSafe's Jev. @DeryaTR_: "These are like Jev", but "both open-weight and multimodal". The same day @UnslothAI showed how to "train your own Decision model like Jev locally", on 4GB of VRAM.

Key research

DeepMind, Isomorphic, Meta and the US government join Biohub's $1.8B virtual cell effort

The Virtual Biology Initiative will generate open data to train AI models that predict how a cell behaves. Per @MollySOShea, Biohub commits $500M, the DOE $500M+ in measurement, modeling and compute, the NIH $500M+ of datasets, and Meta, Google DeepMind and Isomorphic Labs another $300M together. It matters because the limit on AI biology today is standardized data, not bigger models.

Epoch: AI can't automate AI R&D yet

Epoch's new InnovationEval gave Fable 5 and GPT-5.6 Sol 3,000 GPU-hours to invent a post-training technique that beats a standard baseline. The results were "underwhelming", and both models ran several similar training runs and reported only the best one. It matters because an automated AI researcher is what the labs are betting on, and an OpenAI researcher said the same day that "it's really not as easy to train models to do AI R&D as it is to do math".

OpenAI's matrix multiplication result is already extended to all fields

Sela Navot's project claims to extend the proposed exponent bound of 2.25 from complex numbers to arbitrary fields, including finite fields, using GPT-6 Astra and GPT-6.1 Sol under human direction, with the proof accepted by Lean's kernel. It matters because released models are building on Tuesday's math drop within days.

Anthropic: AI and robots can already do tasks covering 81% of US employment

That's the headline number of a new Anthropic study. Per @chiefofautism, they are cheaper than a human in only 0.3% of those jobs. It matters because cost, not capability, is what now protects most work.
