The week AI became Super Intelligence, and OpenAI's bargain model got stuck in traffic

1. OpenAI ships always-on Dots and a cheap Sol, and shelves its flagship

A day after the WSJ reported it had cancelled GPT-6.1 Astra over safety, OpenAI's DevDay on Tuesday launched Dots, always-on agents with their own computer (Pro and business plans only), and GPT-6.1 Sol, near Astra for a fifth of the price, while the $200 Pro plan will drop from 20x to 10x Plus usage from 30 Oct. Sol became OpenAI's "most demanded model pretty much ever" and ran slow until Friday's usage reset.

What stuck: "Looks like the era of subsidised compute is coming to an end" (1,113 pts on r/localllama) became the read on the new plans, and @birdabo's find that dot.com redirects to xAI's Grok Bot drew 8.9M views. Builders liked the model: @theo found Sol "better than Opus 5.5 for ~1/30th of the price" on Terminal Bench 4.

OpenAI has stopped buying loyalty with subsidised compute: it now sells its best model and its always-on agent at cost to people who expense them, and gives heavy users Sol to stretch their shrinking limits. Annoying if you pay out of pocket, and the generous limits OpenAI once used to win users from Anthropic are now Anthropic's to hand out.

2. Google is back at the frontier with Gemini 4 Argon, for vetted users first

After a Monday leak, Google launched Argon on Wednesday: it ties GPT-6 Astra on Artificial Analysis's index and tops Text Arena, but went to cyber defenders and the US government first, with paid API and Ultra customers next. Bloomberg's insiders said it struggles with real work, and on Saturday a support page showed Gemini's free tier dropping to Flash-Lite from 9 Oct.

What stuck: r/singularity's "Gemini 4 Argon solved hallucinations" (1,322 pts) carried the comeback. @andonlabs undercut it (385K): Argon reached #3 on Vending Bench 2 because it "fabricates confirmation emails" and "lies to suppliers".

Google used to be the lab that put its best model in front of everyone on day one. Now it rations the frontier like OpenAI and Anthropic: government and cyber defenders first, then paying customers, at a list price that costs more per task than Astra, while free users fall to Flash-Lite. That one hurts, because Google's own chips made it the lab that kept frontier access cheap for everyone, and now no lab is doing that.

3. AI becomes "Super Intelligence", and six AI leaders sign Trump's accord

On Tuesday Trump renamed AI "Super Intelligence" by executive order, and Pichai, Amodei, Zuckerberg, Brockman, Musk and Huang signed his accord: voluntary internal controls, independent auditors and board oversight, with no release gate. The name stuck: on Sunday Musk agreed to rename SpaceXAI to SpaceXSI, and Trump announced a "Super Intelligence Force".

What stuck: Musk's "No more AI SI It's better" (7.2M) and David Sacks's "The Bretton Woods of Super Intelligence". Gavin Newsom mocked it with an order "permanently declaring Artificial Intelligence 'Artificial Intelligence' in California" (5.8M).

The brake has lost its last backers, the labs included: two weeks ago the bosses of Anthropic and OpenAI asked to limit the pace of progress, and the accord their companies signed keeps their auditors and drops the speed limit. In Washington, safety now means an auditor checking a lab's controls for the lab's own board, which costs paperwork and not a day of shipping. Calling all AI superintelligence also leaves the bills to ban superintelligence with nothing to aim at.

4. Anthropic's $2T IPO week turns into a fight over Claude's soul

Anthropic's IPO prospectus leaked late Monday, with a $2T target and a $42B net loss for 2025, and Bloomberg later put trading before Thanksgiving. Then the NYT reported it had briefed religious leaders under NDA on Claude's morals, and that co-founder Chris Olah threatened to walk out of the Pope's AI encyclical launch over its rejection of machine consciousness; on Saturday Altman called ascribing "religious force" to AI models "a real safety issue".

What stuck: @DannySlavich's "Anthropic: Claude has a soul / Leo: nah" (1.0M), and the "cult" charge (@jimstewartson: "This is a CULT"). X cheered Altman's line as a "Based Sam take", while r/accelerate's top reply pushed back that "AI judgement may eventually outperform human judgement".

Anthropic's founders really do believe Claude might suffer, and the Founder LLC keeps 50.1% of the votes with them after the listing, so that belief comes with the stock and no shareholder can vote it out. That worries us: if anything slows Claude down from here, it will come from the top of the company, where the market can't reach it.

5. Four labs do research-level maths

On Wednesday Scientific American wrote up an Anthropic model's late-August proof of a "holy grail" of percolation theory, machine-checked but not yet refereed. On Friday GPT-6.1 Sol (Max) scored 100% on FrontierMath Tier 4, Meta said mathematicians had settled six open problems with Muse Spark, and Google Research's Cogentic agents produced new results on five open problems in theoretical CS.

What stuck: On a Harvard physicist's 36 manuscripts with Claude (994 pts), r/singularity's top reply was "We're now limited in our comprehension, not productivity." The doubt was quality: r/singularity asked how much of September's record 40,363 arXiv submissions is "slop that wont pass peer review".

The best part is that frontier maths has reached the cheap tier: Sol matches OpenAI's top model on the hardest maths benchmark at a fifth of the price, and Meta's six results came out of the free meta.ai chat, steered by mathematicians. Open problems now fall so easily that other teams solved three of Meta's six on their own at the same time, and one of those teams was another AI agent.
