DIDEN's magnetic spider robot welds Korean ship hulls and funds its own humanoid replacement

Big thing

A magnetic-footed robot climbs ship hulls to weld

▶ Watch the video

DIDEN Robotics' Spider, a quadruped with magnetic feet, climbs vertical and curved steel walls carrying welding and inspection modules. DIDEN says it already welds on vessels in Korean shipyards.

Loved. r/accelerate's top reply: "Soon enough there isn't going to be an industry not taken over by robots or AI." Another: "my arachnophobia doesn't like that AT ALL. my brain says accelerate tho". DIDEN's CBO @yubeen_park says the goal is "robot-native shipyards".

DIDEN is turning its climbing welder into the cash and data engine for a humanoid: investors just valued it about ten times higher than in January, and the money goes to a biped and a factory. Exciting that the company that built a robot for exactly this job, and one of its own shipyard customers, now both bet that a humanoid will end up doing the welding on ships.

1. About 300 Cybercabs gather in Dallas

Roughly 300 Cybercabs are parked at Tesla's Dallas Robotaxi hub, and Tesla is reportedly testing them in the city with no one inside, so a Dallas launch looks close.

Fans see a launch, skeptics a slog. @binarybits: the last 18 months vindicate the thesis that Tesla "will have to do the same city-by-city slog as Waymo" (82K). @AmineTX: "No unsupervised Cybercab today".

2. A robot makes Donatos pizzas start to finish

Donatos' automated pizza maker does every step with a robot while customers watch.

Split between wages and hygiene. @WallStreetApes blames minimum-wage rises: "Everyone will just be replaced with robots" (112K). r/accelerate's top reply: "who wants hair, sweat or someone to sneeze on their pizza?"

3. RoboParty shows its RP1 humanoid at IROS

RP1 runs on UFO, RoboParty's unsupervised RL framework for humanoid control. The company will share its open-source roadmap in October, with software and hardware releases later in Q4. IROS visitors were invited to kick it.

Few takes beyond the clips. @techniahqrobot: RP1 "recovered its balance and kept moving after the impacts."

Key research

MotorMind runs a robot arm on a general VLM, with no robot training

A harness turns a general vision-language model's proposed mid-level actions into deterministic robot control, with feedback and memory. It scores 66.7% on LIBERO-PRO's base suites against at most 13.3% for earlier zero-shot methods, and 95% on a real xArm6. It matters because failures fall as the VLM gets stronger, so robots improve whenever chat models do.

Daimon threads beads by touch at IROS

Daimon Robotics' robot picks up tiny beads, aligns their holes and threads them onto a flexible string, guided by Daimon-TWM, a world model grounded in touch that predicts what happens next and adjusts. It matters because vision can't see inside a grasp, and contact is most of real manipulation.

Robot brains are turning into chat models: a small open one with no robot training already beats trained robot policies as soon as the layout or the task changes. That leaves robotics companies only what chat models are still bad at (touch, precision and speed), and they're pulling back to the fingertips.
