Germany's first humanoid groping case has two suspects, and neither is the robot

Today: Tesla's Roadster unveil in Waco, live at 7:55pm CST (01:55 UK Friday).

Big thing

German police seize a humanoid robot that allegedly groped a 16-year-old in Cologne

Police took the €5,000 robot and two phones after it allegedly touched a girl and made lewd gestures outside a fast-food restaurant. They are checking whether a 16-year-old boy and a 19-year-old man, who apparently livestreamed it, were steering it (@CBSNews).

Disbelief, then the liability question. @Ferm0s: "So who's guilty when the hands belong to a machine?" @robotics_biz: "Public humanoid deployments just got their first real liability case."

Labs news & launches

1. [rumour] Tesla wants an Optimus line that builds 1,000+ robots a week by end of 2026

The Information reports Tesla managers are targeting an automated line with that capacity. Fremont went from a few dozen robots a week in Q2 to several hundred in August.

Few takes yet. @ChrisGPT: "If this true that would mean Tesla has thousands of humanoid robots currently." @tslaming read Tesla's new Optimus Fleet Coordinator job as a "STRONG SIGNAL" (17K).

2. Boston Dynamics says an Atlas takes about a day to build, and wants an hour next year

▶ Watch the video

In a behind-the-scenes video of its Atlas prototype shop, a program manager puts today's build time at about a day, aims for an hour next year and minutes after that (Humanoids Daily).

Little reaction so far. @Rainmaker1973 shared Atlas doing a cartwheel into a backflip: "This is insane."

3. Robot dogs patrol Atlanta apartment complexes, voiced by remote operators

▶ Watch the video

Undaunted Robotic Security runs the dogs at several metro Atlanta complexes. Human operators watch their cameras and talk through them, and in the viral clip they had Indian accents (@Blue_Eyes).

Mostly jokes. @NilesSankey: "no one ever considered making a creepy security robot with an Indian telemarketer accent" (123K). @stevegrubershow: "They're going to steal the robot dogs and make them fight each other just wait".

4. Artificial Analysis hands frontier models a real robot arm, and GPT-6 Astra leads

▶ Watch the video

AA-Robotics v0.1 runs eight zero-shot tabletop tasks on a 6-axis arm, seen through four cameras and driven by code. GPT-6 Astra scores 69, GPT-6.1 Sol 65, Gemini 4 Argon 55 and Claude Opus 5.5 49. A task takes about 30 minutes, roughly 100x slower and 10x pricier than a human.

Impressed by the start, not the speed. @RohanBhanotAI: "The interesting part is not the leaderboard. It is the failure mode: missed grips and bad sequencing." @MrAsifShah: "AI builds your app in 30 seconds. Pouring you a drink? 30 minutes."

5. Rhoda AI's robot finds objects by touch, with its cameras blindfolded

▶ Watch the video

Its new in-house fingertip sensor feels pressure, texture, vibration, slip and temperature, and feeds Rhoda's Direct Video Action policy (@acrosson).

@acrosson: "I think robotics is still over-indexing on vision." Rhoda's @vincesitzmann: it is "much much smaller than commercially available ones!"

Key research

Claude and GPT build a robot's digital twin from one phone video, in an hour

Released with Ken Goldberg, RoboSimStudio is an open toolkit that lets agents such as Fable, Astra and Argon model sponges, cables and cloth. From a phone clip of a robot wiping a bar with a sponge, Claude and GPT each built a full-dynamics twin. It matters because soft objects are hard to simulate, yet in an hour an agent built a sponge twin good enough to tune a real robot's policy.
